UPDATE 4:30 p.m.: Forest Drive has now been reopened to traffic after the Columbia-Richland Fire Department responded to a cut natural gas line.

Forest Drive, a major Columbia-area roadway, was closed to traffic in both directions earlier in the day after a gas line in the area was cut, according to the Columbia-Richland Fire Department.

The section of Forest Drive near Two Notch Road was closed in both directions after utility workers cut a natural gas line, the fire department confirmed to The State. It took the fire department about 1 hour and 20 minutes to fix the gas line.

The Fire Department said the natural gas line was cut near Providence Street, that’s next to the Forest Drive Starbucks near Benedict College.

Close to 21,000 vehicles travel this section of Forest Drive each day, on average.
