A popular South Carolina convenience store chain that is known for fried chicken, breakfast sandwiches and more is planning a location along a busy highway in Lexington.

Spinx, which was founded in Greenville and has stores across the state, will bring a location to Lexington near the corner of Highway 378 and Charter Oak Road. There is a sign at the site announcing that it is the future home of a Spinx and touting “fresh food” and a car wash. Lexington County property records show the land is owned by Enigma Corp., the real estate arm of Spinx.

An opening date for a Spinx store at the site has not been publicly announced. Land was actively being cleared this week when a reporter went by.

Spinx was founded by Stewart Spinks in Greenville in 1972, per the company’s website, with the first store at Laurens Road and East Washington Street. The company now has more than 80 stores across the state with more than 1,400 employees, per the Spinx website.

Through the years Spinx grew its operations, particularly as it relates to food options. The company has been known for its fried chicken, which it deems “legendary,” with bone-in, tenders and nuggets available. Spinx also carries a number of breakfast items, including chicken biscuits, sausage biscuits, hash browns and more.

The site being cleared at Highway 378 and Charter Oak Road is in a busy area. The Hendrix Crossing shopping center, which is anchored by a Publix and home to San Jose, Marco’s Pizza and other businesses, is on the other side of Charter Oak nearby. Meanwhile, a shopping center anchored by a Planet Fitness is located across Highway 378. Lexington High School is about a mile south.

More than 20,000 cars per day travel down Highway 378 in that section, while about 13,200 cars per day traverse Charter Oak Road, per state Department of Transportation data.
