Car fire blocks entrance to popular shopping center in Columbia, officials say
An entrance to one of the most popular shopping districts in the Columbia area was temporarily blocked Tuesday when a vehicle went up in flames, according to the Irmo Fire District.
An entrance to Columbiana Station was closed by firefighters after the fire near the intersection of Bower Parkway and Harbison Boulevard, the fire district said in a news release. This impacted drivers in the busy area and any shoppers who might have been out during the early stages of the holiday season.
In a video of the incident shared by the fire district at about 1:30 p.m., flames could be seen shooting through the roof of the vehicle as plumes of smoke rose above.
No injuries were reported.
Information about how long it took to extinguish the fire was not available, but the fire district said the vehicle was a total loss.
The shopping center entrance was blocked as firefighters remained at the scene dousing hot spots, according to the release.
There was no word about the cause of the fire, and officials did not say if foul play was suspected.
More than 30,000 cars per day travel down Harbison Boulevard, while 8,000-plus will drive on that section of Bower Parkway, according to South Carolina Department of Transportation traffic data.
