The town of Lexington is planning to add 100 new parking spots to its downtown.

The surface-level parking lot is set to go between North Church Street and North Lake Drive, a block from Lexington’s Main Street. The popular downtown has free street parking and a study, presented to the town council in November 2024, found that much of the town’s existing parking went underutilized.

The town council voted Monday night to enter into an easement agreement with the owner of the land, beginning the process of putting the parking lot on the 1.5-acre plot of land. Town officials anticipate construction will begin in mid to late 2026 and be completed before 2027, town spokesperson Laurin Barnes told The State.

The town has not put the project out to bid yet, so it’s not known how much the project will cost, the spokesperson said.

Earlier this year, the town completed construction on a paved parking lot next to the Old Mill Pond Trail and nearby restaurants and businesses.
