A man is in custody and is charged in a Friday shooting in the Midlands.

The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office said it arrested Staton Cole Montgomery, 21, and charged him with attempted murder.

The sheriff’s office said deputies responded at about 9 a.m. Friday after getting reports of a shooting on Childrens Lane in Sumter. That’s just off St. Pauls Church Road.

When they arrived, deputies found a person who had been shot. That person was taken by Sumter County EMS to Prisma Health Tuomey hospital.

Montgomery was taken into custody, the sheriff’s office said. He was being held in the Sumter County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing as of Friday morning, deputies noted in a news release.
