The hibachi grills are fired up once again along Columbiana Drive.

Sukiya Japanese Steakhouse, a new restaurant with a host of Asian culinary offerings, opened its doors Dec. 5 at 360 Columbiana Drive in Columbia’s popular Harbison shopping district. The eatery is in the location that formerly was home to another Japanese restaurant, Yamato, for many years.

Red banners touting that the restaurant is now open for business were flying in front of the location on Monday morning when a reporter went by. Initial Google reviews began to roll in during the weekend, with diners praising Sukiya’s remodeling of the dining space and complimenting the work of the chefs.

The restaurant space at 360 Columbiana Drive previously occupied by Yamato for decades. That restaurant closed its doors in Jan. 2024. Sukiya initially announced in Sept. 2024 that it would be bringing new life to the location.

The menu at Sukiya includes a host of Japanese steakhouse favorites, including hibachi steak, shrimp and chicken, as well as salmon, filet mignon, lobster and more. It also has an extensive sushi and sashimi roster, as well as soups, salads and more.

This is the second Sukiya restaurant in the Midlands. There also is a location at 5228 Sunset Blvd. in Lexington.

The Columbiana Drive Sukiya location is in the midst of the well-known Harbison commercial district in Columbia. It’s just north of the Columbiana Centre mall and the AMC Columbia 14 movie theater. Other nearby businesses include Carrabba’s Italian Grill, Texas Roadhouse and the Braza Do Sul Brazilian steakhouse, among others.

About 13,000 cars per day travel down that section of Columbiana Drive, per state Department of Transportation stats, while more than 28,000 cars per day traverse nearby Harbison Boulevard. Interstate 26 is close by to the east, and about 86,000 cars per day drive down that stretch, per state statistics.
