Measles outbreak in SC Upstate spikes with 27 new cases since Friday. Here’s where

This illustration provided a 3D graphic representation of a spherical-shaped, measles virus particle, that was studded with glycoprotein tubercles. Those tubercular studs colorized maroon, are known as H-proteins (hemagglutinin), while those colorized gray, represented what are referred to as F-proteins (fusion). The F-protein is responsible for fusion of the virus and host cell membranes, viral penetration, and hemolysis. The H-protein is responsible for the binding of virions to cells. Both types of proteinaceous studs are embedded in the particle envelope’s lipid bilayer.

The measles outbreak in South Carolina continues to spread with 27 new cases since Friday and 114 this year, the South Carolina Department of Public Health reported Tuesday.

The agency said 16 of the 27 cases stemmed from exposure at the Way of Truth Church in Inman. The agency previously reported one person who attended church on Nov. 7 and Nov. 9 was infected with the virus.

Public health said eight people are household members of known cases, one resulted from a previously reported school exposure and one was from an exposure in a health care setting.

The source of exposure is unknown for one of the people.

Previously, Public Health reported cases in four Spartanburg County schools: Fairforest Elementary, Rainbow Lake Middle, Fairforest Middle and Dorman High – Freshman Campus.

Public Health also previously reported a confirmed case of measles in an employee at the Greenville Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) that may have resulted in exposures to visitors on the days of Nov. 10 and Nov. 11, 2025, from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. each day.

There were 254 people in quarantine and 16 in isolation Tuesday, Public Health reported.

The cases include:

Under 5: 20 5-17: 75 18+: 10 Minors under 18 (age undisclosed): 6

Vaccination status: 105 unvaccinated, three partially vaccinated with one of the recommended two-dose MMR sequences, one vaccinated, two unknown.

People with measles are contagious from four days before the rash appears through four days after its onset, meaning people with mild symptoms can spread measles before they know they have the disease, Public Health said.

The agency’s message was for people mildly ill to stay home.

“We encourage employers to support workers in following DPH recommendations to stay out of work while ill or in quarantine which also protects businesses, other workers and clients,” the agency said in a new release.
