Nickelodeon chief to challenge Runyan for City Council seat

The head of Columbia’s Nickelodeon theater said Monday he’s joining the growing list of candidates challenging citywide councilman Cameron Runyan.

Andy Smith told friends and relatives in an email he will make an official announcement and have a kickoff party Wednesday.

Smith said he’s running in November’s election for the at-large seat held for one term by Runyan. The incumbent has ignited opposition in part because of his remarks and push back against a consultant hired by the city to help develop a commission to watchdog that same-sex and other residents are protected from discrimination.

Smith, without naming Runyan, said he’s running in part to help make Columbia “welcoming to all of our citizens regardless of who they love.”

Smith also advocates more pedestrian-friendly streets, “interesting public spaces” and cleaner water.

The political newcomer said he would layout a full platform later.

Smith becomes the second person to file for the seat. Howard Duvall, former longtime executive director or the S.C. Municipal Association of South Carolina, filed earlier for the seat
