Steve Taneyhill celebration of life in Columbia’s Five Points. Here’s when.
A public celebration of life for Gamecock football great Steve Taneyhill will be held Jan. 10 at the popular bars owned by Taneyhill in Columbia’s Five Points neighborhood.
“Friends are invited to gather to share stories, enjoy music, and celebrate Steve’s life in a way filled with laughter and fellowship, just the way he would have wanted,” reads Taneyhill’s obituary on the Eggers Funeral Home website.
Taneyhill died Dec. 15 after battling cancer. He was 52 years old.
Beheld as one of the University of South Carolina’s greatest quarterbacks, Taneyhill helmed the Gamecocks as quarterback from 1992-95, and led the team to its first bowl win in 1995.
He was celebrated for his flowing mullet and energetic attitude. After his Gamecocks career ended, he pivoted to coaching, taking Chesterfield High School to three straight state championships from 2007 to 2009.
In 2016, Taneyhill bought Group Therapy, a famed Five Points bar considered among the oldest in Columbia. Group Therapy has been a community and USC staple since it opened in 1978.
In 2023, Taneyhill expanded his entrepreneurial footprint by purchasing Breakers and Breakers Live, which are just across Harden Street from Group Therapy. Breakers was rebranded into CB-18, short for “Cocks by 18.” He purchased the businesses with Gamecocks podcaster Jeff O’Hara.
A private memorial service for Taneyhill’s family and friends , was held Dec. 19, at Eggers Funeral Home in Boiling Springs.
The public celebration of life will begin at 4 p.m. Jan. 10 at Taneyhill’s Five Points bars. More details will be released in the near future, according to Taneyhill’s obituary.
Taneyhill’s family has asked that instead of flowers, those wanting to honor his legacy do so by making a donation to the Taneyhill Fund through Garnet Trust.
