A well-known bakery in West Columbia plans to bid farewell.

Always Original Bakery, located at 501 Meeting St. in the Shoppes at Meeting Place shopping center, announced in a Facebook post that it plans to close its doors. The final day will be Feb. 15, the post indicated.

“After five wonderful years of baking, creating and sharing countless sweet and savory moments with you, the owners, Jay [Dawson] and George [Grogan], have made the bittersweet decision to close our doors and step into retirement,” the social media post read.

Always Original opened on Meeting Street in 2021. The shop has been known for a host of baked goods, including cakes, cookies, brownies, scones, pies, cupcakes muffins and more.

“From simple cookies to specialty cakes (and everything in between), every treat was made with love -- and your support made it all possible,” Always Original owners wrote on social media. “We are deeply grateful for every visit, every smile, and every memory you have shared with us. You’ve been more than customers of this neighborhood bakery; you’ve been part of our bakery family. ... Our last day of operation will be Sunday, February 15, so please visit the bakery before we say goodbye and so we can thank you in person.”

Always Original Bakery’s hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. They are closed on Mondays.

The Shoppes at Meeting Place retail strip is located on Meeting Street just west of the Gervais Street Bridge. Other businesses in the center include Pedego electric bike shop, Pretty Nails, and Signature Catering, among others.
