A major Columbia commuter route will be disrupted this week, as the South Carolina Department of Transportation plans to close the right westbound lane of Elmwood Avenue for repairs.

The work should last two days, with the lane closing Jan. 17 and 18 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. both days. DOT expects the bridge to be fully re-opened by Jan. 19.

The portion of Elmwood Avenue in question connects downtown Columbia to the northwest commercial corridor of Harbison, as well as to Interstate 126.

An average of nearly 66,000 people travel the stretch of 126 over the river each day. More than 50,000 people drive down Elmwood Avenue each day.
