A new supermarket is getting ready to open its doors in the Midlands.

Food Lion, which has grocery stores across the eastern part of the U.S., will open a new store at 10508 Two Notch Road in the Pontiac area near northeast Columbia on Wednesday, Jan. 21, according to a spokesperson for the company.

The store will be in the newly constructed Pontiac Towne Center shopping development, which has a number of spaces for new businesses.

There are more than 1,100 Food Lion stores in the U.S., per data website ScrapeHero. Most of them are concentrated in the South and Mid-Atlantic. The company has long had a strong presence in the Midlands, with more than 20 locations in the Columbia and Lexington County areas.

Food Lion was founded in Salisbury, NC in 1957, as noted on the Food Lion website. It has more than 82,000 employees and serves 10 million customers per week.

The new Food Lion will arrive in a high-traffic area. About 22,000 cars per day travel down that stretch of Two Notch, per state Department of Transportation data.
