Fire and smoke billow through top of burning building in Columbia, officials say
There was a large structure fire early Tuesday morning in a part of Columbia near Interstate 20, according to the Irmo Fire District.
At about 6:15 a.m., officials said firefighters were at the scene of a structure fire in the 100 block of Garden Path Lane. That’s near Exit 63 on I-20, which is the junction with Bush River Road.
The first crew of firefighters found heavy fire from several windows when they arrived, officials said in a news release. Fire quickly spread to the attic and through the roof, according to the release.
Information about when firefighters learned about the burning building, and the time it took to get the blaze under control, was not available.
But officials said fire crews will be on scene throughout the morning dousing hot spots. Members of the West Columbia Fire Department, Lexington County Fire and Columbia Fire Department also responded to the burning building and provided assistance.
The building was not occupied, and there were no injuries, according to the release.
The property wasn’t as fortunate, as the building suffered extensive damage, officials said. It was not clear if the building was considered a total loss.
There was no word about what caused the fire, or where it originated, but it is under investigation. Officials did not say if foul play was suspected.
