One person is dead and another injured following a Tuesday car crash in the parking lot of an Upstate charter school.

South Carolina Highway Patrol Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway said the wreck happened at about 3:45 p.m. Tuesday at 1830 W. Georgia Road in Greenville County. That’s the address Brashier Middle College Charter High School in the Simpsonville area.

The Highway Patrol said a 2011 Hyundai SUV and a 2019 Ford Edge were both stopped in the parking lot of the school when the Hyundai accelerated forward and sideswiped the Ford Edge. The Hyundai then continued into a grass field, the Highway Patrol said, and hit a fence before entering a retention pond and striking and embankment.

The driver of the Hyundai died at the scene, law enforcement said, while the passenger of the Hyundai was airlifted to Greenville Memorial Hospital for injuries. The driver of the Ford was uninjured, the Highway Patrol said.

The deceased had not yet been publicly identified as of early Wednesday morning. The incident remains under investigation, per the Highway Patrol.
