A major grocery store chain is planning a new location in the Midlands.

Publix, which has stores in a number of states, has signed a lease to bring a new location to Blythewood, the company said Thursday in a news release. The store will be at the northwest corner of Highway 21 and Turkey Farm Road, not far from Westwood High School.

“We’re excited to bring a new location to Blythewood and to be part of this growing community,” publix spokesman Jared Glover said in statement. “Our new location reflects our commitment to serving this area and delivering the experience our customers know and expect.”

An opening timeframe is yet to be determined, Publix said. The new store, which will be called Publix at Blythewood Marketplace, will be nearly 55,000 square feet and will employ about 150 people, per the company.

There are more than 1,400 Publix stores across the South, according to the company’s website. It was founded in Florida in 1930, and is the largest employee-owned company in the U.S. Publix employs more than 260,000 people nationwide, its website notes.

There are 74 Publix stores in South Carolina, per the Publix website, and there are a host of locations in the Midlands. Its footprint has continued to grow here, as Publix opened a new store last year in Elgin near northeast Columbia, and has announced it intends to build a store in the downtown BullStreet District.
