Columbia Mexican spot ends daily restaurant service, will ‘reimagine the space’
A Mexican eatery in a prominent spot in a key Columbia commercial district has ended its daily restaurant service and says the property is “transitioning” into a new use.
Taco Mundo Kitchen y Cantina at 828 Gervais St. in Columbia’s popular Vista district had its last day of full service on March 8, according to posts on Facebook and on the Taco Mundo website. The restaurant had been open for about a year. It is in the space that formerly was home to Liberty Tap Room for two decades. Both Taco Mundo and Liberty Tap Room are part of the Homegrown Hospitality Group.
“Taco Mundo Vista is transitioning from daily restaurant service as we reimagine the space for future experiences and events,” Taco Mundo said on social media and its website. “We are incredibly grateful to the Columbia community and our team members who brought Taco Mundo to life every day.”
The Facebook page for Taco Mundo Vista lists it as “temporarily closed.”
“Taco Mundo Vista will shift our focus toward utilizing the building in a way that better serves the neighborhood, adopting a more event-driven approach and exploring thoughtful future partnerships,” Taco Mundo posted online.
The Vista remains one of Columbia’s most enduring hospitality districts. Located just west of the South Carolina State House, it is lined with restaurants, bars, hotels, apartments, art galleries, shops, music venues and more.
