The South Carolina Governor’s School for Arts and Humanities was named the best public high school in Greenville County, according to Niche.

Niche analyzes academic and student life from the U.S. Department of Education to compile its Best Public High Schools ranking. It also uses test scores, college data, and ratings from Niche users.

Academics account for 60% of the grade, culture and diversity 12.5%, Parent/Student Surveys on Overall Experience and teacher surveys, 10% each, clubs and activities, resources and facilities and sports 2.5% each.

The Governor’s School is located on the site of what once was Furman University and close to the Reedy River and Reedy River Falls in downtown Greenville. There are 236 students in grades 10-12. It is a tuition-free residential arts-centered school offering pre-professional training in creative writing, dance, drama, film, music and visual arts.

The school says alumni include SC Teachers of the Year; Emmy, Tony, Grammy and Webby award winners; and Golden Globe and Oscar nominees.

2. Greenville Technical Charter High School, Greenville

Grades 9-12. Niche also lists it as the #1 in Best Charter High Schools in South Carolina.

3. Brashier Middle College in Simpsonville

Grades 9-12, and listed as the #2 in Best Charter High Schools in South Carolina.

It has 484 students in grades 9-12 with a student-teacher ratio of 18 to 1. State test scores show 84% of students are at least proficient in math and 97% in reading.

4. Greenville Senior High Academy, Greenville

The public magnet specializes in law, finance, and business with 1,791 students in grades 9-12 .

Students take part in Mock Trial, business marketing and entrepreneurship.

The student-to-teacher ratio is 19 to 1. According to state test scores, 62% of students are at least proficient in math and 70% in reading.

5. Greer Middle College Charter High School, Taylors

A public charter school for 9-12 grades, it is considered the fourth best Charter High Schools in South Carolina.

It has 527 students with a student-teacher ratio of 18 to 1. According to state test scores, 86% of students are at least proficient in math and 100% in reading.

6. Riverside High School, Greer

Operated by Greenville County Schools, Riverside has 1,816 students in grades 9-12. The student-teacher ratio is 20 to 1. According to state test scores, 69% of students are at least proficient in math and 87% in reading.

7. Eastside High School, Taylors

Also a Greenville County public school, Eastside has 1,528 students in grades 9-12 with a student-teacher ratio of 19 to 1. According to state test scores, 60% of students are at least proficient in math and 80% in reading.

8. J.L. Mann High Academy, Greenville

A Greenville County public magnet school, J.L. Mann specializes in mathematics, science, and technology in grades 9-12.

J.L. Mann High Academy has 2,062 students with a student-teacher ratio of 18 to 1. According to state test scores, 52% of students are at least proficient in math and 78% in reading.

9. Mauldin High School, Mauldin

A Greenville County public school for 9-12 grades, Mauldin High has 2,274 students in grades 9-12 with a student-teacher ratio of 19 to 1. According to state test scores, 71% of students are at least proficient in math and 83% in reading.
