A school that opened in 2008 as the first to allow enrollment no matter what neighborhood a student lived in is now Greenville County’s best public elementary school.
Sterling School, whose name honors the much revered Sterling High that burned down in the 1960s, was named by Niche based on test scores and ratings from Niche users.
It ranked 17th in the state.
Academics account for 60% of the grade, culture and diversity 12.5%, parent/student surveys and teacher surveys 10% each, clubs and activities, resources and facilities and sports 2.5% each.
Sterling includes 4K through the eighth grade as well as the countywide gifted center, named in honor of Nobel prize winner and Greenville native Charles Townes.
The school has 713 students with a student-teacher ratio of 14 to 1. According to state test scores, 92% of students are at least proficient in math and 92% in reading.
Sterling School was named a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education in 2023.

Monarch has 882 students in grades PK, K-5 with a student-teacher ratio of 16 to 1. According to state test scores, 79% of students are at least proficient in math and 78% in reading.

Tigerville Elementary has 280 students in grades PK, K-5 with a student-teacher ratio of 12 to 1. According to state test scores, 87% of students are at least proficient in math and 85% in reading.
