The federal government plans to sell or otherwise dispose of Columbia’s Strom Thurmond Federal Building and Courthouse at 1835 Assembly Street, according to a press release shared earlier this month.

The 16-story building in downtown Columbia is home to several government offices, including the Social Security Administration and the Small Business Administration. The large property was built in 1979.

Government officials began eyeing a sale for the Strom Thurmond building in early 2025, The State reported at the time.

Officials with the federal government’s real estate manager the General Services Administration, say getting the property off the government’s real estate portfolio would save $56.3 million in “delinquent maintenance,” and more than $3 million in annual maintenance costs, according to a media release.

The property is expected to soon be listed for sale at realestatesales.gov.
