Authorities in Lexington County arrested teenager and accused him of firing a gun at a popular local park.

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department said in a Sunday release that it arrested Najee Thompson, 18, of Newberry, and charged him with pointing and presenting a firearm, use of a firearm by a person under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and breach of peace.

Deputies say Thompson fired shots in the air during an event Saturday evening at Crooked Creek Park in Chapin. Deputies said the suspect indicated he fired the shots because he thought the park was “the country.”

There were no injuries. Thompson was being held at the Lexington County Detention Center as of Sunday afternoon.
