The coroner’s office has released the names of two drivers who died in a head-on crash on Interstate 26 in the Columbia area in the wee hours of Sunday morning.

Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford said in Monday release that the driver of a 2023 Hyundai was Josiah J. Evan, 24, of Columbia. The coroner said the driver of a 2018 Nissan SUV was Dyquan Hykeem-Jamaal, 31, of Lexington. Both Evan and Hykeem-Jamaal died in the incident.

South Carolina Highway Patrol Master Trooper Joseph Rowell said in a news release that the crash happened at about 2:25 a.m. Sunday near the 107.5 mile marker on Interstate 26 in Richland County. That’s in the Bush River Road area.

The Highway Patrol said that a 2023 Hyundai sedan was traveling east in the westbound lanes of Interstate 26, while a 2018 Nissan SUV was traveling west in the westbound lanes. The Hyundai struck the Nissan head-on, the Highway Patrol said.

The Highway Patrol and the Richland County Coroner’s Office are continuing to investigate the crash.
