One person is dead following a Sunday crash between a motorcycle and a tractor trailer in Aiken County.

South Carolina Highway Patrol Cpl. David Jones said in a release that the crash happened at 10:35 p.m. Sunday on Sand Bar Ferry Road near Laurie Drive in Aiken County.

The Highway Patrol said a 2019 International tractor trailer was traveling east on Sand Bar Ferry Road when it slowed to turn left into a private drive. A 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle, also traveling east, then struck the tractor trailer from the rear, the Highway Patrol said. The motorcyclist died at the scene, officials said.

Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables identified the motorcycle driver as David Smith III, 52, of Beech Island.

The Highway Patrol and the coroner’s office continue to investigate the crash.
