Deputies are probing a fatal shooting after finding a man with a gunshot wound during a wreck investigation.

Richland County Sheriff’s Department said in a news release that deputies responded at about 10:20 Sunday night to the 3800 block of Humphrey Drive after getting a report of a car crash. That’s in northeast Columbia, not far from Two Notch Road.

When deputies arrivedthey found a car that had struck a tree, the sheriff’s department said. There was one person, an adult male, inside the car. A sheriff’s department incident report said the man was unresponsive as a deputy attempted to help him.

EMS soon arrived and, while working with the victim, discovered he had a gunshot wound to the upper body. The victim was transported to the hospital, per a sheriff’s department incident report.

The name of the deceased had not been publicly released as of Monday morning.

The incident remains under investigation. Deputies said those with information can contact the Richland County Sheriff’s Department at 803-576-3000 or submit an anonymous tip through CrimeStoppers at 1-800-CRIME-SC.
