Two juveniles were allegedly caught on video killing a black and white kitten in a town home apartment complex in Duncan.

Duncan Police Chief Benjamin Cox said the kitten was the offspring of a stray cat, who was living in a box set out by a resident to give it food and shelter.

The names of the juveniles were not released due to their age. The older of two was given a juvenile summons for animal cruelty while the other was too young and any action against them requires review by the Solicitor’s Office.

The video allegedly showed the older juvenile throw the kitten across the parking lot, Cox said. The younger child then stomped on the kitten’s head, picked it up and slammed it to the ground, apparently holding it by its tail. The older juvenile then picked up the kitten, slammed the kitten on the side of a garbage bin and threw it inside.

Duncan Police Investigator Holden Parker was able to identify the juveniles on the video and contacted their parents.

“The details of this case are disturbing and unfortunate, especially due to the age and violence towards a living animal,” Cox said in a release. “These young individuals will now have to deal with the ramifications of their actions.”

He said he hoped they would come to understand this was serious and disturbing, and they would learn to feel remorse.

Cox did not release the video.

“The Duncan Police Department will always strive to hold those accountable that should be, but we also have to respect the fact that these are young kids and have specific laws in place to protect their identity as juveniles while navigating the criminal justice system,” he said.

The Spartanburg County Solicitor’s Office will decide by the end of the month what actions will be taken against the younger child.

Cox said a resident of the apartment complex buried the kitten.
