From sandwiches to art, here’s how to spend a day on Lexington’s Main Street
Lexington’s Main Street stands on its own. With new additions constantly coming to a quickly growing corridor, it’s having a moment.
The downtown is always bustling as it is, and as more businesses pour into the area, it’s certain to see even more visitors.
Whether its food, fitness or fun, here are suggestions for how to spend a day on Main Street in Lexington.
Arts and entertainment
The big attraction in downtown Lexington is the Icehouse Amphitheater, which hosts concerts and events at its 900-seat venue. While some require a paid ticket, others are free to attend. Tribute bands are a popular offering, with artists performing hits from the likes of Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin and the Allman Brothers. It also hosts community bands, pianists and events like the Lexington Wine Walk.
The amphitheater also hosts the Market at Icehouse, which provides a venue for local farmers and grocers to share their wares with shoppers. The market begins this year on Saturday, May 16, and runs through September.
Stop by the town’s first mural for a photo. The mural, unveiled in March, was painted by local artist Michael Geddings.
Craft Axe Throwing offers a less traditional form of fun, equipped with a full bar. Patrons can reserve one of eight lanes for axe throwing, or rent the space for an event.
AR Workshop offers do-it-yourself experiences, from candle pouring to wood workshops.
Dining
For a quick sip or bite, check out coffee shops like The Tent Coffee Shop or O’Hara’s Bakery Cafe, or sandwich joints like Groucho’s Deli and Cribb’s Sandwich and Sweet Shop.
A heartier fare is best enjoyed at one of Lexington’s many sit down restaurants on Main Street. Barrio Tacos, Ember Steakhouse, Libby’s and Bodhi Thai Dining are tasty choices, just to name a few. Nicky’s Pizzeria or TakoSushi are also popular downtown hangouts.
O’Hara’s Public House (next to the similarly named bakery cafe) is a popular choice for drinks, while Voodoo Brewing, Old Mill Brewpub and Keg Cowboy are also great for a beer.
Shopping
Lexington’s Main Street is also home to boutiques selling gifts, antiques and more.
The Kindred Boutique, Craig Reagin Clothiers, Persnickety Shop and White Orchard Boutique peddle clothing, while Tenfold Collective has jewelry offerings.
The Palmetto Nook and 210 Shoppe + Studio are options for those looking for gifts, and Reuben Wade’s sells antiques.
Staying active
There are plenty of ways to stay active on Main Street. Aside from a leisurely stroll, Main Street has Powerhouse Pilates, Pink Lotus Yoga Center and several other gyms and studios.
Head slightly east to the Old Mill Pond, and you’ll find the walking trail for an outdoor romp.
And Old Mill Rentals, a new addition this year, is a kayak rental service right on the pond. Kayaks are available for an hour at a time, Wednesday through Sunday between about 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
