Lottery winner was stunned after purchasing $200K winning ticket in Columbia

A Midlands couple is celebrating after winning $200,000 in the S.C. Education Lottery.

The unidentified couple won the top prize in the new Star Power with a locally-purchased $5 scratch ticket, the lottery announced in a news release.

The woman told lottery officials she stared at her ticket in disbelief after he purchased some for her and her husband at Harry’s on Two Notch Road.

“Is this real?” she asked him when she showed her husband the ticket.

The couple told officials they plan to be responsible with the winnings, taking care of a few debts before they consider making any major purchases. The woman said the winning ticket came as a “big relief” to the couple.

The winners can retain their privacy as South Carolina is one of 11 states — along with Arizona, Delaware, Georgia, Kansas, Maryland, New Jersey, North Dakota, Ohio, Texas and Virginia — that allow lottery winners to remain anonymous.

The odds of purchasing the winning Star Power ticket are 1-in-760,000, according to the S.C. Education Lottery — and there’s still one $200,000 ticket remaining to be purchased.

Players can also enter their Star Power tickets to win a trip to an iHeartRadio music event of their choice.

For selling the winning ticket, Harry’s will also receive a $2,000 commission, the lottery said in a news release.
