Memorial Day is approaching, meaning several shops in the Columbia area will close their doors in observance of the federal holiday.

Started in 1868, after the Civil War ended, Memorial Day is dedicated to U.S. military personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the armed forces.

It’s an important day to honor fallen heroes, but as a result, you may be worried about what will be open in your area.

Here are the businesses in the Columbia area that will be open and closed on Monday, May 25:

Memorial Day operating hours

Grocery stores

The grocery stores that will be open for business include Walmart, Target, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods Market, Dollar General, ALDI and Piggly Wiggly.

ALDI will close two hours early, at 6 p.m.

Pharmacies

CVS stores and their pharmacies will be open on Memorial Day, but some pharmacies will have different hours. Walgreens will also be open on the holiday, but some of its pharmacies will be closed.

The pharmacy at Walgreens at 175 Forum Drive, Columbia, will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Publix’s pharmacy will be closed.

Your local pharmacy may have different operating hours for Memorial Day, so call ahead before visiting a particular location.

Garbage pickup

According to Richland County’s website, if you live outside Columbia’s city limits, and your garbage collection day falls on Memorial Day, it simply moves to the next day.

If you are within the City of Columbia limits, garbage and trash collection routes should operate on their regular schedules with no interruptions for Memorial Day.

Local government offices

Columbia City Hall, West Columbia City Hall and Lexington Town Hall will be closed in observance of Memorial Day. Regular hours will resume on Tuesday.

Banks

The Federal Reserve will be closed on Memorial Day, so don’t expect any banks in the Columbia area to be open. The Stock Market will also be shut down for the holiday.

Post office and delivery services

The U.S. Postal Service will not have any of its offices open for the federal holiday, and there will be no residential or business delivery, except for Priority Mail Express, which is delivered 365 days a year.

For 24/7 access to most postal products and services, go to their website, where you can look up a ZIP Code, track a package, buy stamps, hold mail, print postage online, submit a change of address, schedule a package pickup and find Post Office locations, including self-service kiosks.

UPS offices in Columbia will be closed, and their delivery services will be unavailable.

FedEx delivery services will be unavailable on Monday, but its stores will have modified hours.
