Popular West Columbia riverwalk is flooded, following days of Midlands rain

After days of heavy rains washing over South Carolina, flooding is affecting a popular local trail.

According to the City of West Columbia, a portion of the West Columbia Riverwalk Park is closed, from the Moffatt Street entrance to the area under the Gervais Street Bridge is closed due to flooding.

The West Columbia Riverwalk Park and Amphitheater to the south remain open, the city said. It is unclear when it might reopen.

The riverwalk was also closed on Thursday.

There is more rain in the forecast.

According to AccuWeather, the Carolinas will likely see repeated rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms through the remainder of May, The State reported. Much of South Carolina is expected to receive several more inches of rain. The National Weather Service predicted that the Columbia area will experience hot and humid conditions toward the end of the week, with showers likely to develop in the afternoon. Temperatures are expected to cool down this weekend.
