A busy corner in the heart of downtown Columbia is set to get a new branch of a national bank.

Huntington Bank, which has locations across 14 states, is planning a new branch at 1331 Gervais St., according to city of Columbia public records. That’s at the northwest corner of Gervais and Marion streets.

City documents show Huntington Bank filed permits on May 28 for a nearly $3.1 million new construction of a bank at 1331 Gervais. Records indicate the bank would be about 3,000 square feet.

The site at 1331 Gervais formerly was home to a Bank of America drive-thru facility, which is no longer in operation.

The Huntington branch project went through city approvals last fall. Planning commission documents indicate the former Bank of America drive-thru building will be removed to make way for the new Huntington, which would be a single-story structure with drive-thru lanes.

Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, Huntington Bank has locations across 14 states, per its website, including Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Texas, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

The Gervais Street branch would be Huntington’s first in Columbia. The company has other SC locations in Greenville, Spartanburg and Charleston.

The bank is coming to a high-traffic area in the thick of downtown Columbia, not far from the South Carolina State House and the University of South Carolina. About 35,000 cars per day travel down that section of Gervais Street.
