A safer and more walkable Church Street Bridge in downtown Greenville opens Monday after a 14-month, $30 million renovation.

The bridge remained open for the first part of the construction and closed completely after the men’s and women’s college basketball games were finished in March.

The bridge was resurfaced, steel girders painted, joints sealed, and the sidewalk expanded from 5 feet to 9 feet.

Stairs down to McBee Street were replaced and new lighting installed.

The bridge is expected to be open at midday Monday, the city of Greenville posted on Facebook.

“Thanks for your patience,” the post said.

Built in 1959, the bridge extends 0.32 miles from Washington Street to Camperdown Way.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation said aging and increased traffic caused the bridge to deteriorate so much that large-scale rehabilitation was necessary.

Average daily volume was 26,300 vehicles in 2021. DOT predicts there will be 38,000 on the road by 2039.
