Fire was blowing out front windows of building in Columbia, SC officials say

Lots of firefighters were called on Wednesday night as a building went up in flames, according to the Columbia Fire Department.

The fire was quickly spreading through a vacant business in the 2600 block of Decker Boulevard, the fire department said in a news release. That’s in Columbia, near the junction with Two Notch Road.

Firefighters responded to the burning building at about 8:50 p.m., after dispatchers were alerted about a good amount of smoke in the air, according to the release. At the building, firefighters saw flames blowing out of the front windows of the building and smoke throughout the structure, the fire department said.

Firefighters entered the building and began extinguishing flames in the roof before the crews had to pull out of the building and fight the fire from the perimeter after seeing parts of the roof were sagging, according to the release.

After regrouping, firefighters entered the rear of the building and the fire was extinguished, the fire department said.

No one was found inside the building and there were no injuries, according to the release.

Six engine companies, two rescue companies and multiple support companies as well as battalions responded to the call, the fire department said.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Richland County Fire Marshal’s Office. There was no word if foul play was suspected.
