Work underway on downtown Columbia 7-story apartments near USC Greek Village
A new 7-story downtown Columbia apartment building is now under construction directly across from existing student apartments on Lincoln Street, near the University of South Carolina’s Greek Village.
Columbia’s Planning Commission approved the project in November, and now the apartments are under construction after the city issued building permits in mid-June.
The apartments will include 237 units, and a more than 300-space parking garage. Developers are also building a separated bike lane called a “cycle track” adjacent to the project.
The project is described as a “multi-family residential development,” in planning documents, and is not being billed specifically for student renters.
The City of Columbia issued a $60.5 million building permit for the project. The site at Catawba and Lincoln streets is now active, with dirt being moved and heavy equipment on the property. A warehouse building that previously sat on the corner has been removed.
Richland County has also approved a 50% tax credit for the development in exchange for investments in public infrastructure. Those investments include site remediation, the planned parking and the sidewalk and bike lane. The full project is valued at $63.5 million.
Colorado-based Cardinal Group Investments is the developer behind the project, while local firm Mashburn Construction is building the apartments.
