One person dies in ‘apparent drowning’ in SC lake, coroner’s office says

Authorities say a person died in an apparent drowning on a South Carolina lake.

The Oconee County Coroner’s office said in a news release that it was dispatched at about 8:10 a.m. July 4 to Lake Hartwell near Harts Cove apartments in reference to an apparent drowning victim.

The incident was first reported to Oconee County 911 at atout 2:36 a.m. July 4. Just after 8 a.m. the male victim, who was from Jackson County, Georgia, was located in about 17 feet of water, approximately 60 feet from shore.

The victim had been swimming with friends, the coroner’s office said. The male’s name was not yet released as of about 11 a.m. Saturday, pending notification of his family.
