Lugoff Fire-Rescue crews free trapped pick-up truck driver after crash with school bus
Lugoff Fire-Rescue crews freed a trapped truck driver after a school bus, which was being delivered to a school district out of state, pinned it against two trees late Thursday evening.
Fire Chief Dennis Ray said rescue units were dispatched to I-20, near mile marker 94, just after 8 p.m. in reference to a major vehicle collision. When firefighters arrived, they found a pick-up truck wedged in between two trees and a full-size school bus in the woods beside the interstate.
Ray said firefighters had to work between the trees and the school bus for several minutes in order to extract the driver from the truck. Once the driver was freed, he was airlifted to a local Columbia hospital to receive treatment for injuries sustained during the crash.
The driver was the only occupant of the bus at the time of the crash, Ray said. The driver did sustain non life-threatening injuries from the crash and was transported to a local hospital.
It is unclear how the accident happened, but Ray said the South Carolina Highway Patrol will investigate the cause of the crash.
The State will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
