S.C. Department of Public Safety announces weekend road deaths
South Carolina Department of Public Safety officials said there were five people killed on South Carolina roadways from Aug. 21 to Aug. 23.
All five of the deaths occurred on US routes, SC roads and secondary roads, according to officials. Of those, two individuals were wearing seat belts, while two were not wearing seat belts. One of the deaths was recorded as a pedestrian death.
As of Aug. 23, 588 people have died on the state’s highways, compared to 488 highway deaths during the same time period in 2014. Of the 397 motor vehicle occupants killed in 2015, 203 were not wearing seat belts.
Officials said 64 pedestrians have died compared to 51 in 2014, 88 motorcyclists have died compared to 58 in 2014 and 11 bicyclists have died compared to seven in 2014.
