Appeals Court: Columbia not required to release private information on city manager finalists

Columbia officials do not have to release private information such as home addresses, personal telephone numbers or personal email addresses of finalists for city manager, the state Appeals Court panel ruled Wednesday.

A three-judge panel overturned the core of a lower court’s ruling that City Hall must release the information under the state Freedom of Information Act. But the appeals judges agreed the city must pay $11,185 in legal fees incurred by George Glassmeyer, who sued to get the information.

Glassmeyer, an Irmo lawyer and former state prosecutor, filed the request in January 2013 in connection with City Council’s hiring of Teresa Wilson as city manager.

Glassmeyer said he has not decided whether to appeal to the S.C. Supreme Court.
