The Hearth Center for Eating Disorders at Carolina Children’s Home is closing its doors fewer than three years after opening.

The Carolina Children’s Home changed its mission in January 2013 to focus on running the state’s first comprehensive center dedicated to treating eating disorders.

“Unfortunately the volume of patients has not reached a sustainable level and our resources are depleted,” board chairman Stephen Creech said in a statement.

Creech said the center will be searching to find a partner to continue to provide services in the community.

The Sunnyside Drive facility near Trenholm Road and Forest Acres is adjacent to the former Carolina Children’s Home property that has been recently embroiled in a zoning controversy over a planned commercial assisted living facility and high-end homes development.
