Chase, wrong way crash kills firefighter
Multiple agencies are investigating a chase that led to a crash that killed a firefighter in Greenville County.
A Greenville County deputy was called to a report of a stolen truck at TD's Express Mart on West Blue Ridge Drive Thursday morning.
When he arrived he found two trucks parked end to end, the Sheriff says the deputy couldn't tell which one was stolen.
Sheriff Loftis says the deputy approached one of the trucks, and that's when the driver tried to run him over, trapping him against a concrete wall.
The deputy fired several shots, hitting the vehicle.
That's when Loftis says a 12 to 15 mile long chase started, with the driver taking off down Poinsett Highway to U.S. 25 toward Traveler's Rest.
After several miles, Loftis says the truck driver began driving north in the southbound lane, that's when deputies called off the chase because of reckless driving.
Less than a mile later, the truck struck and killed a motorcyclist.
Coroner Parks Evans tells us that motorcyclist was a firefighter on his way to work. No other details on the firefighter have been released.
The suspect in that truck was arrested at the scene of the crash.
After the crash deputies learned the truck involved in the chase was not the stolen truck.
Investigators returned to TD's Express Mart on West Blue Ridge Drive where they found the stolen truck still parked, and arrested a second suspect.
SLED, Highway Patrol, and the Greenville County Sheriff's Office are all investigating.
