A man was rescued after his vehicle washed away at Hayne Street and Ethel Road in Spartanburg where a sinkhole had formed from flooding early Wednesday.

The vehicle washed away and the driver was found downstream clinging to a tree, according to the Spartanburg County Office of Emergency Management.

Emergency responders were able to reach the driver and pull him to safety, according to the Spartanburg County Office of Emergency Management.

The roadway remains closed and authorities are advising motorists to avoid the area.

Coroner Rusty Clevenger said the sinkhole report was one of several incidents he had been informed of throughout the county but said fortunately, he was not needed at the sinkhole.

On New Cut Road, Clevenger said a woman was found dead inside her car near Howard Street. He said her car became submerged after she drove into a flooded underpass early Wednesday.

Her identity has not yet been released.
