Irmo Fire Marshal investigating cause of two-alarm apartment complex fire

Irmo Fire District

Irmo firefighters battled a two-alarm fire Monday morning at an apartment complex near Piney Grove Road, officials said.

Irmo Fire Chief Mike Sonefeld said firefighters were dispatched to the Country Walk Apartments in the 400 block of Foxfire Drive in reference to a single alarm fire just after 10:30 a.m.

Sonefeld said firefighters could see the smoke coming from the apartment complex as they were leaving their station, which is only a few minutes away. Columbia and Lexington firefighters also responded to the complex to provide assistance.

When firefighters arrived, heavy smoke and fire was coming from one of the complex’s units, Sonefeld said. So far there have been no reported injuries from the fire and all of the tenants were able to evacuate safely, Sonefeld said.

Irmo Fire Marshal’s Office investigators are now on scene and gearing up to determine the cause of the fire as well as the estimated damages.
