One eastbound lane of 1-20 over Broad River closed after reports of person in the water

Emergency response teams have blocked one lane of eastbound traffic on I-20 on the overpass over Broad River after receiving reports of a person in the water.

Brick Lewis, a Columbia Fire Department spokesman, said firefighters were dispatched to the overpass just before 10:30 a.m. Wednesday morning in reference to a person in the water.

Lewis said Richland County Sheriff’s Department, South Carolina Highway Patrol and Emergency Medical Services units are all on scene. Dive teams have entered the water in an attempt to locate the person.

Any motorists planning on traveling through the area are urged to use caution as emergency personnel continue to work in the area.
