Lexington company receives Engineering Emmy

SpeedTree software, created in 2002 by IDV Inc. of Lexington, received a 2015 Engineering Emmy in Los Angeles.

The software has seen strong growth in broadcast and cable since its television debut on Sesame Street in 2011, according to IDV Inc.

SpeedTree is a virtual vegetation software that produces natural real time trees and plants for movie projects, animations and architectural fly-throughs. A March story published by The State described SpeedTree as “Photoshop for vegetation.”

“Our objective from the start has been to give the best tree and plant tools to as many artists and creators as possible,” said Michael Sechrest, a co-founder of IDV.

Earlier this year, SpeedTree received a Scientific and Technical Academy Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The 67th Engineering Emmy Awards were held Oct. 28. The awards are administered by the Television Academy.

“The recognition of the television community is particularly gratifying,” said Chris King, another company co-founder. “We’re seeing not just increasing use in television, but a broadening array of types of uses. SpeedTree is making its way into documentaries, fantasies and historic fiction as well as real-life dramas and sitcoms.
