County provides free help to residents with contaminated wells

A disaster recovery contractor is assisting Richland County residents whose wells may have been contaminated in the October flood.

Tetra Tech staffers are following up with homeowners who received positive results for total coliform or E. coli from well-water samples submitted to the state Department of Health and Environmental Control.

Tetra Tech is available to provide disinfection services and retest residential well water to assure the wells are free of harmful bacteria.

Their service is free for homeowners whose wells have already been tested by DHEC.

Contaminated wells have been an issue of particular concern in Lower Richland, County Councilman Kelvin Washington has said.

The county warns that residents should be wary of anyone without proper Richland County or DHEC credentials who offers to disinfect or test their wells. Tetra Tech staffers carry a Richland County photo ID, and DHEC inspectors carry a DHEC photo ID.

For more information on Tetra Tech’s retesting of wells, call Richland County at (803) 929-6000.
