Many questions remained unanswered Wednesday about the shootout in Cayce that killed a suspect and injured two police officers.

Officials in the Lexington County community still refuse to name the officers, one of whom is hospitalized after being wounded in the shootout in which Demetrius Bryant of Columbia died.

“When (Chief Charles McNair) determines it’s an appropriate time – after he speaks with SLED and the investigation is moving along – whenever it’s appropriate, we’re going to release what we can,” said Sgt. Evan Antley of the Cayce Department of Public Safety.

The other officer was injured during a struggle but went home after receiving medical care, officials said.

Though officials say the incident was “drug-related,” they decline to specify what that means.

As is usual for shootings involving officers, the State Law Enforcement Division is investigating.
