Florence man charged for making false statements in shooting death investigation
SUMTER COUNTY, SC Sumter County deputies have charged a man they say made several false statements to investigators concerning the shooting death of a 70-year-old man Tuesday evening.
Braden Bunch, a sheriff’s office spokesman, said 43-year-old Travis Byron Jones, of Florence, has been charged with obstruction of justice in relation to the investigation.
Bunch said deputies responded to a residence in the 3300 block of Narrow Paved Road in Lynchburg at 10:45 p.m. Tuesday in reference to a shooting. Upon arrival, Bunch said deputies found Joseph Frey dead inside of the home.
Deputies also located 33-year-old George Shine, of Florence, in the home suffering from a single gunshot wound to the chest, Bunch said.
Bunch said when investigators interviewed Jones about the shooting, he made several false statements to the, however the statements Jones made have not been released.
Jones was transported to the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center, where he is being held pending a bond hearing.
Sumter County deputies will continue to investigate the incident.
