Victim in Sunday shooting identified

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts has released the name of the man shot and killed on Joe Louis Drive in Columbia early Sunday morning.

Deputies found Antwan Caroline, 25, dead in his front yard at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday, Watts said. An autopsy showed Caroline had died from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Investigators with the Richland County Sheriff’s Department located the suspected shooter, Melvin James White, 54, later Sunday morning. White has been charged with murder, according to sheriff’s spokesman Curtis Wilson.

Wilson said the two men were acquaintances and that alcohol was involved in the incident.

The Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate.
