Irmo police, fire on scene of crash involving train and vehicle

Irmo police and firefighters are on the scene of a motor-vehicle accident that occurred early Friday morning involving a car and a train.

Chief Fire Marshal Jeff Allen, a spokesman for Irmo Fire District, said the crash occurred just before 6:30 a.m. at the railroad crossing at Challedon Drive, near St. Andrews and Piney Grove roads. The vehicle was struck by the train and overturned.

Allen said the vehicle’s driver has been extracted and transported to a local hospital to receive treatment for injuries. A tow truck has been called in to remove the vehicle from the area.

Motorists planning to travel through the area Friday morning are urged to seek alternative routes to avoid traffic congestion and to avoid first responders operating in the area.
