Upstate high school athlete dies in car crash

A Greenville County high school student was killed Friday night after a car crashed near a Piedmont golf course, authorities said.

Jeramia Benaiah Justin Oliver, 16, of Piedmont, died at the scene just before 5 p.m., the Coroner's Office said.

Oliver and the driver were on Piedmont Golf Course Road when their car ran off the roadway, flipped and hit a tree, according to troopers.

Troopers said the driver suffered serious injuries and had to be extricated from the car, then flown to Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Both were wearing seatbelts.

Oliver, who went by the name Justin, was a sophomore at Woodmont High School, said Beth Brotherton, a spokeswoman for the Greenville County schools.

He was on the football and basketball teams, Brotherton said.

Oliver was the second teen who died in a wreck this week.

On Tuesday, 14-year-old Kirsten Smith was killed on Rutherford Road on her way home from getting ice cream. Smith was a freshman at Wade Hampton High School.
