Deputy shot in head in Greenville County
One man is dead and a deputy was shot in the head in a confrontation in Greenville County early Thursday morning.
Deputies were called to an apartment in Taylors at 1 a.m. after a neighbor reported gunshots and a possible armed robbery, said Lt. Ty Miller with the Greenville Sheriff’s Department. When deputies entered the apartment, a man inside opened fire on them, striking one in the head. Another deputy fired back, killing the suspect.
The injured deputy is expected to recover, and was released from surgery between 9 and 10 a.m. Thursday, Miller said.
“We are pleased to hear he is going to recover,” she said. “Of course, we’ll do everything we can to support his family during that time.”
The State Law Enforcement Division has been called in to investigate. Both deputies involved in the shooting are on administrative leave during the investigation, which Miller said is standard procedure for a shooting.
This incident marks the 47th officer-involved shooting in South Carolina in 2015, the most since 1999, according to SLED records.
