Heavy rain and resulting rising flood waters on Tuesday prompted the state DOT to close 17 roads statewide, several of them in the Midlands. Other closures were announced by local officials.

The following roads are closed in the Midlands:

▪ Shady Grove Road from St. John’s Road to West Shady Grove Road (Richland County) because of flooding

▪ West Shady Grove Road from Ash Court to Julius Richardson Road (Richland County) because of flooding

▪ Cherokee Trail between Old Cherokee and Georgia Lane (Lexington County) because of structural damage to bridge

▪ Drawdebil Road between Windy Road and Jeter Road (Lexington County) because road is washed out due to flooding

▪ Murray Linder Road from Lakeshote Drive to Old Bush River Road (Lexington County) due to flooding

Murray Linder Road in Lexington County and West Shady Grove Road (in Richalnd County) have been damaged and will require repairs, officials said. Other roads will have to be inspected once flood waters subside.

The city of West Columbia closed the Wyman M. “Mac” Rish Riverwalk Park and Amphitheater on Tuesday because of rising water on the Congaree River.

The closure will remain in place until further notice, Brian Carter, West Columbia deputy city administrator, said in an emailed news release.

As soon as waters recede and the paths are cleared of debris, the park will be reopened and the public will be notified, Carter said.
